Theapplication of enzymes in modern laundry detergent formulas is acommon practice, and more than 50 percent of all laundry detergentscontain enzymes. The most commonly used enzymes in today’s laundrydetergents include protease, amylase, and lipase (Rahse,2012).The enzymes occur as active ingredients in the detergents, and theyfacilitate dirt removal within short durations and at lowtemperatures. Enzymes in detergents are used in small proportions dueto their effectiveness. Laundry detergents laced with enzymes arealso known as biological detergents. This is because the enzymes areobtained from microorganisms such as bacteria that live in hotsprings (Rahse,2012).

Thefunctions of enzymes in detergents

Dirtmanifests in different forms and includes starches, proteins, andlipids. Enzymes have the ability to catalyze chemical reactions inbetween detergents and dirt. For example, proteases are used inbreaking up proteins from stains from leftovers and blood (Rahse,2012).This process converts the blood and leftover stains into componentunits (amino acids) or the short chains of amino acids (peptides).The component units can dissolve in water more easily than the intactproteins (Rahse,2012).

Enzymesused in detergents enhance the cleaning capability of detergents. Theenzymes break down large materials that may be hard to remove intosmaller fragments that are easy to remove. Proteases enzyme helpsdetergents to remove dirt from body fluids such as mucus, sweat, andblood (Rahse,2012).Amylases make it easier for detergents to remove carbohydrate stainswhile lipases help break down lipid stains via hydrolysis. Enzymesenhance the cleaning capabilities of detergents by reducing theeffort needed to clean surfaces, laundry, and utensils.
