Theeffect of bullying on the self-esteem of kids correlates to theirsocioeconomic status. Studies indicate that orphans and children withsingle parents are more predisposed to school bullying than childrenwith both parents (Fu, Land, &amp Lamb, 2012). The study alsorevealed that most of the children bullied at schools have negativeparent-child interactions. The lack of a suitable and friendly socialenvironment for such children leads to the loss of self-esteem,thereby making them vulnerable and susceptible to bullying. Regardingeconomic status, Fu, Land and Lamb (2012) posited that students fromlower economic backgrounds have relatively low self-esteem thanchildren from high economic backgrounds. Therefore, children fromeconomically challenged backgrounds are likely to be bullied moreoften at schools that their counterparts who are more economicallyendowed. The study further revealed different responses to bullyingbetween kids from low socioeconomic status (SES) and those from highsocioeconomic status. The level of self-esteem among kids from highSES was relatively high than the kids from low SES.

Bullyinginflicts psychological and emotional trauma in kids who,consequently, exhibit low self-esteem during and after school.According to Jansen et al. (2012), kids who experience bullyingbecome socially anxious and display low self-esteem. Low self-esteemleads to the loss of confidence and increases self-doubt among thevictims. Most of the kids bullied are never confident in whateverthey do and are likely to withdraw from most school activities.Bullying also leads to self-rejection when the victims embrace whatthe perpetrators tell them as the truth. Kids who have experiencedbullying are often belittled over things that they can hardly changesuch as the color of their skin and other physical characteristics.In this regard, they believe that their socioeconomic status has madethem lesser human belongs than the bullies. Jansen et al. (2012)further reported that each day, about 160,000 children fail to attendschool in America because of the fear of victimization by theircolleagues. The research underpins the seriousness of the vice andthe need for lasting interventions.
