The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine(IOM) has collaborated in creating the initiative on the Future ofNursing that will clearly nurture some important goals in the field.In fact, the implementation of the initiative will achieve atransformational change as well. The two are focused on recreatingthe nursing workforce so that it might meet the demands of the healthcare and ensure that the patients get the services that are worththeir money. A change in the nursing education will makesure that they acquire leadership and critical thinking skills thatwill guide them into making knowledgeable and informed decisions.

On the other hand, the same IOM’s report will also improve thenursing workforce development by improving the nursing education. Itwill also focus on redesigning the health care based on the currentneeds and focus on the technological advancement to reach therequired goals (Hassmiller et al., 2013). For instance, the reportwill stress on information infrastructure and the data collectionapproaches to facilitate the efficiency of service delivery anddecision making. The fact that the nurses will be considered fullpartners with other professionals in health care will boost theworking relationships and make sure that the patients get the optimumservices they might require. All in all, the changes suggested willenhance the nursing workforce development by focusing on theeducation, technology, and a supportive work environment too.

The report will also improve the nursing practice by insisting on theevidence-based practice that is consistent with the currentscientific research. The state-based action coalitions have turned out to be an importantaspect in facilitating the achievement of the goals that Future ofNursing: Campaign for Action had specified. More specifically, thecoalition has united the health care institutions, nurses,businesses, leaders as well as consumers (Hassmiller, 2013). Thecoalition will then sensitize the stakeholders on the changes made inthe health care and the improved service delivery too. Acollaborative community is an important part of the success of themedical institution since it nurtures efficiency in the operations.In fact, the coalitions also identify the best practices since theconsumers will reveal what they love and what they do not. My state that is Texas is fully focused on implementing the policiesin the report and especially improving the health outcomes as well asthe efficient use of the health resources. The two initiatives arefocused on ensuring that the nursing field improves and the patientsreceive the services that are much appropriate (Naylor, 2012). Moreimportantly, improving the health outcomes will need the nursesacquiring enough education and include technology in the healthresources to improve the service delivery in the health institutionsin Texas.

The nursing profession had seen various barriers such as the problemwith the nurse-to-patient ratio. In the process, the nurses have beenoverwhelmed with the tasks and some of them end up suffering fromburn-out and stress (Naylor, 2012). Apart from that, the patientshave reported reduced health outcomes, and they deem some of thetreatment procedures as being ineffective. Hence, there is the needto correct such barriers since they are interfering with theimplementation of the report.

On the positive side, the nursing advocates in Texas have been ableto push for the appropriate staffing ratio that will ensure thenurses make informed decisions. In fact, the staffing ratios havespecified the minimum number of the nurses that should serve specificshifts (Naylor, 2012). It also specifies the number of patients aswell as the time that each shift should last. The nursing advocatesmight need to insist on the evidence-based practice that relies onthe scientific research (Hassmiller, 2013). In the process, thenurses will also need to incorporate technology in their treatment tomake informed decisions that will ensure that the patients benefitfrom the approaches.

In conclusion, the IOM report has used the nursing education,scientific research and the state-based action coalitions to ensurethat the patients achieve the required health outcomes. Morespecifically, the health institutions are supposed to prioritize thehealth of the patients and make sure that they recover within theshortest time possible. To achieve that, they will need the nurses tohave the right education that will ensure that they make the rightdecisions while treating the patients. Apart from that, technologyhas proved to be a better way that supports the evidence-basedpractice. All in all, the IOM report also facilitates the creation ofthe state-based action coalitions to facilitate the teamwork amongthe stakeholders. Even Texas has proved that it is benefiting fromthe IOM report and ensuring that the patients get better healthoutcomes.
