Chapter 3:Some Practice Models for Occupational Therapy in Mental Health

  • Recapitulation of ontogenesis- This refers to when a client reverts to earlier stages of development

  • Cognitive skill- This is the ability to perceive and organize information for thinking and solving problems

  • Sexual identity skill- This refers to the capacity to accept one`s spirituality and participate in mutually beneficial relationships

  • Self-identity skill- This is the ability to recognize one’s strengths and weaknesses and view the self as reliable and consistent

  • Group interaction skill- This refers to the capacity to participate in various groups as a productive and helpful member

  • Sensory integration skill- This is the ability to receive and use information from the balance, touch, and position senses to perform particular actions

Chapter threeoutlines six occupational therapy models that can be used to achievebeneficial outcomes for persons with psychiatric disorders. Some ofthese models include sensory integration, psychoeducation, roleacquisition, the model of human occupation, and cognitivedisabilities (Early, 2009).

Notably, severalideas would contribute to a profitable discussion. Such issuesinclude:

  • Development concepts- How do they contribute to the adaptive skills model?

  • Behavioral concepts- How do they contribute to the role acquisition model?

Chapter threemakes a crucial contribution towards understanding concepts learnedthroughout the curriculum. In this regard, it shows that usefultheories must explain how an individual’s mental health affectstheir occupation and vice versa (Early, 2009). Furthermore, ideasfrom previous chapters on medical models are substantiated with theintroduction of the adaptive skills framework (Early, 2009). Besides,the chapter has significant implications for future professionalexperiences through the emphasis on client-centered therapy (Early,2009).
