Theblood is one of the connective tissues, which plays a vital role inregulating the body’s systems and maintaining a balance. Otherfunctions include supplying nutrients and oxygen to tissues,transporting hormones, fighting diseases, and removing waste from thebody (Orchard &amp Nation, 2014). These functions are performed bythe red and white blood cells, which are produced by stem cells inthe bone marrow. However, the red blood cells also known aserythrocytes tend to look different from the white blood cells aftermaturation (Orchard &amp Nation, 2014). The distinction is mainlybased on the shape and coloring of the red blood cells.

Theerythrocytes contain hemoglobin, which gives them the redpigmentation and facilitates the cells’ primary function oftransporting oxygen throughout the body. The mature red blood cellslack a nucleus and have smaller corpuscles as compared to their whitecounterparts (Orchard &amp Nation, 2014). Thus, they have additionalroom to store hemoglobin, which enables them to transport moreoxygen. Besides, it allows the red blood cells to change shapeeasily hence, they can fit through various blood vessels in the body(Orchard &amp Nation, 2014). Moreover, unlike white blood cells, theerythrocytes have a biconcave shape with a flattened center, whichenlarges the surface areas to allow rapid diffusion of oxygen(Orchard &amp Nation, 2014). However, the lack of nucleus alsolimits the life span of the erythrocytes since the membrane isdamaged when the cells travel through the smallest blood vessels(Orchard &amp Nation, 2014).

Inconclusion, the red and white blood cells are produced from a singlestem cell in the bone marrow, but they look different duringmaturity. The mature erythrocytes do not have a nucleus. The redblood cells are biconcave with a flattened center, unlike the whiteblood cells, which are irregularly shaped. Besides, the hemoglobingives the erythrocytes the red pigmentation and allows the cells totransport blood and oxygen throughout the body.
