How my career goals as a Social Worker are consistent with the mission of the Department of Social Work Saint Cloud State University
Themission of the Department of Social Work of Saint Cloud StateUniversity is “to use an anti-oppression lens, with a focus onrace, class, and gender, to inform both its educational environmentand educational programs” (St. State Cloud University, 2016). Thedepartment expects the students, faculty, and the staff to becommitted to transformative and experiential processes of educationthat will challenge them into thinking critically and analyzingsystemic problems of inequality within the US and the rest of theworld. It is contended that this process will go a long way inpreparing the professional social workers towards working as changeagents within the diverse global society (St. State Cloud University,2016).
Myprimary career goal as a social worker is to be an invested licensedsocial work driven to establish trusting relationships with clientsand advocate for their best interests. To achieve this goal, I intendto nurture professionalism, social work skills, and culturalcompetency, ethics, communication, and teamwork, among others areasof expertise.
Thesegoals are in line with those of Department of Social Work Saint CloudState University in many ways. For instance, the purpose of using “ananti-oppression lens, with a focus on race, class, and gender”supports the achievement of my career goal to enable me to createtrusting relationships with clients and advocate for their bestinterests. Furthermore, in my career goals, I acknowledge that thecultural issues such as race, class, and gender, which are mentionedin that appear in the mission of Department of Social Work, are achallenge for practice. Therefore, the effort of seeking to createtrusting relationships with clients and advocating for their bestinterests is supported by the mission of Department of Social Work.The mission of Department of Social Work is well placed to enable menurture professionalism, social work skills, and cultural competency,ethics, communication, and teamwork, among others skills, need forcareer success.
How my career goals as a Social Worker are consistent The mission of the MSW Program
Themission of Master of Social Work program is oriented towards engagingstudents in education programs to prepare them to think criticallyand evaluating practices and programs and contribute to the body ofsocial works knowledge by participating in active research. In orderto achieve this, the course will prepare students to enable them towork collaboratively and efficiently as professional social workers,focusing on enhancing the human well-being and promoting economic,social, and political justice within the diverse global environment.Moreover, by using community-based approaches and justice-centeredsystems, the programs are focused towards preparing social workprofessionals who can work efficiently and benefit various people indifferent settings of social service at the advanced level (St. StateCloud University, 2016).
Mycareer goal is in line with the MSW program in the sense that if Iwent through the MSW program, I would enable me to increase thecapacity to achieve my career goals. For instance, while my careergoal as a social worker is to be an invested licensed social workdriven to establish trusting relationships with clients and advocatefor their best interests, the MSW program supports my goal because itis aimed at equipping skills to enable work collaboratively andefficiently as professional social workers.
Moreover,While I intend to nurture professionalism, social work skills, andcultural competency, ethics, communication, and teamwork, amongothers areas of professional competency, MSW program is meant toincrease my capacity think critically and evaluating practices andprograms successful outcomes. In essence, the MSW program is alignedwith my career goals because it supports the processes of becoming anall-around professional social worker.
How my career goals as a Social Worker are consistent with values of the Social Work profession as articulated in the NASW Code of Ethics
TheNASW Code of Ethics acknowledges the primary mission of theprofession of social work is enhancing the human well-being and wellas provide help towards achieving the fundamental human rights of allthe people, giving particular attention to empowerments and need forindividuals who are vulnerable, living in poverty or oppressed. Themost outstanding element of the social work is professional’s focuson the individual and society well-being. To achieve this wellbeing,social workers ought to focus on forces that cause the problem andstrive to address it. The social work mission is hinged on a set ofcore values that must be embraced by social work professionals. Thesecore values include service, integrity, dignity, worth of the person,competency, social justice, and the importance of humanrelationships. The principle of duty requires social workers to helppeople address social issues.
Theprinciple of social justice calls upon professionals to challengeforms of injustices. The dignity of worth requires social workers torespect worth and dignity of all the people. Integrity requiressocial workers to be trustworthy. Competency requires social workersto expedite competency when on duty. The NASW Code of Ethics requiresall professionals in the social work field to reflect this code ofethics in their practices.

To achieve this efficiently, Iwill have to accede to various requirements in the NASW Code ofEthics. While I intend to nurture professionalism, social workskills, and cultural competency, ethics, communication, and teamwork,among others areas of professional competency, I will not be able tobe all-round if I do not embrace the core values of NASW Code ofEthics as a core framework. Using the NASW Code of Ethics as aprofessional guide means will be able to grow professionally in termsof service, integrity, dignity, worth of the person, competency,social justice, and the importance of human relationships, thereby beable to successfully exhibit professionalism, social work skills, andcultural competency, ethics, communication, and teamwork, amongothers areas of professional competency
b.Celebrating Diversity as a social Justice issue, and the contributionI plan to make toward the resolution of the problem
Celebratingdiversity means acknowledging the ethnic, racial, cultural,religious, gender, and philosophical differences inherent to people(Bell & Berry, 2013). In essence, it involves avoidingdiscriminations based on background disposition of individuals. Inthe social work professional context, this the issue of celebratingdiversity lends itself a problematic area that the society shouldaddress because it is one of the cases of social, economic andpolitical exclusion resulting in systematic problems such as poverty.
Whilethe community has attempted to face this issue, many challenges stillneed to be resolved to have an all-inclusive society that celebratesdiversity. According to Dwyer, Richard, and Chadwyck (2013), anyapproaches to diversity need to have a broad focus. The currentpractical understanding of diversity is limited in the sense that itperceives the accommodating ‘cultural rituals’ and allowingpeople to live autonomously, enjoying the lifestyles such as food,dress, and music. However, in reality, it means being able tounderstand the differences in diversity dispositions and exercisemeasures to be inclusive to all the people in areas such asemployment, healthcare access, education (Richard and Chadwyck,2013).
Therefore,in line with this observation, I acknowledge that the problem withcelebrating diversity is inherently rooted in the misunderstanding ofwhat the best practices should entail. Therefore, the contribution Iplan to make towards addressing the problem will require advocating,charting a framework to guide successful implementation of diversityand supporting all the efforts such as through sensitization of thepublic. I also acknowledge that all that might be needed to achievethis is cultural competency. Interesting, this element is alreadymentioned as part of my career goals, meaning I will be able todevelop diversity goals to be culturally competent. It is also worthnoting that have desirable results will need a concerted effort byall players, including the government and players in differentprofessional fields. Leadership is necessary to mobilize all theplayers (Bell & Berry, 2013). In this regard, I also plan tonurture leadership skills.
